Traditional Sámi weaving in progress

I have just started to weave on my new warp weighted loom. This is a traditional Sea Sámi ratnu/rana/grene, a weave produced for sale to the mountain Sámi. I use colourful stripes, as they used to be made before the 2nd World war. During the war, German soldiers burned the Norwegian Sea Sámi farms. After that, all ratnus were made only in white, grey and black. I look upon this as an expression of grief. I now restore the colours, and add some new, taking them back as a reclamation act.

Spirit Land/Vuoiŋŋalaš Eanadat is a practice-based transdisciplinary artistic research project around Sámi animated landscapes. It is an act of decolonization in a hybrid form, composed of textile art, music and theology. Three cosmological spheres in traditional Sámi mythology – Jabbmeájjmo/Underworld, Eana/Earth, och Albmi/Heaven – are represented by monumental weavings, here set to music and presented in the form of a textile concert. Threads, different musical instruments, voices, sung and spoken words interact in a temporal cyclical performance.

First performance with audience, Sigtuna Foundation, Sweden, Women´s International Day, March 8th.

Upcoming in 2025: Kökar, Åland, Franciskus festival July 5th, Turku (Åbo) Cathedral, Finland September 11th. Welcome!
